UNTITLED CHARACTER
2020
This project was developed from my first exploration. A visual representation of consumerism which I explored in the previous unit. I quickly realised that the outcome I created in the form of a creature was too extreme and didn’t have a clear representation of how consumerism changes people ‘s behaviours in day-to-day life. This project i believe visually articulates the impact of consumerism on the individual and as well as behaviours as a socie-ty and how we are each altered by this shown through the form of a character.

I began the exploration of looking at the relationship between sculpture and space, and how it impacts an environment. There were a few elements that I wanted to achieve with the last project but didn’t quite execute well, and so moving forward into this project I really felt passionate about creating a piece that would engage and relate to the public. It was imperative to me that the space in which the sculpture would be is exhibited, can be easily accessible to the public. A space that I believe has a strong connection throughout the body of work would be a shopping centre.

As you will discover throughout the body of work I discuss and explore how architecture facilitates consumerism, for example be-ing shown through the form of escalators which will enable you to get the shops faster to consume i.e., spend. When situated I will document people’s interactions to the virtual space and within the virtual space. As a society we have a desirable need for escapism, to remove ourselves from reality to a place of our own enjoyment and imagination. Consumerism is a prime example of this; for example, we get a momentary high from buying items, which helps to remove us from situation’s that weigh us down in our own reality.

I am very interested in documenting this interaction of a person’s removal from reality and attempt to make visible, the link between consumerism and escapism. The sculpture and environment will be the final body of work however the documentation of interaction will also be part of the outcome as this Is needed to fulfil the research of my findings about consumerism in society.I have created a character that embodies the traits of the negative repetition in society, consuming mindlessly.

By representing this through a character I can exaggerate these traits and ‘pleasures’ of life in hope that the audience can identify or relate to this character. The character’s general appearance shows a lack of care with the extended stomach illustrating the excessive consuming, gorging almost, and this is contradicted with the fishbowl on his head. The fish-bowl protects him from the outside air, keeping his breathing environment as clean as possible which juxtaposes the lack of care he takes with his body. He cares more about enjoying the spoils of life than looking at what it is doing to his body.
